Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question specific decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
